Barnard offers substantially better access to New York City internships during the academic year. Its Manhattan location makes it realistic to intern part-time at media, communications, arts, publishing, nonprofit, and cultural organizations while taking classes. Students can reach many internship sites by subway, and Barnard’s connection to Columbia expands campus programming, alumni networks, and career resources in the city.

For your interests, the location matters more than a simple name-recognition comparison. A Barnard student can attend an interview, work a few afternoon shifts each week, or go to industry events without needing to leave campus for a quarter or wait for summer. New York also offers a dense concentration of magazines, broadcasters, production companies, galleries, museums, public-relations firms, and arts organizations, creating more opportunities to build contacts over several semesters.

Northwestern has excellent pathways in journalism, communications, theatre, film, and the arts, particularly through Medill, the School of Communication, and its strong alumni community. Its Evanston campus also provides access to Chicago internships, which can be especially meaningful in journalism, advertising, theatre, and media. But Chicago is not New York, and most NYC opportunities for Northwestern students will require a summer stay, remote work, a specific quarter away, or travel during breaks.

Barnard does not guarantee an internship, and students still need to apply strategically and manage a demanding academic schedule. But for someone whose priority is regular, in-person access to the New York media and arts ecosystem while enrolled, its location provides a clear practical advantage.
