Which has stronger Catholic student life: WashU or Boston College?

Boston College offers the stronger and more integrated Catholic student life. As a Jesuit, Catholic university, it builds Catholic tradition into campus culture through regular liturgies, retreats, service programs, spiritual direction, and a substantial theology component in the Core Curriculum. Catholic life is visible across residence life, academics, service, and major campus events.

BC’s Campus Ministry supports multiple worship communities and retreat opportunities, including programs designed for students at different stages of faith. Its Jesuit identity also shapes the tone of discussion on campus: reflection, discernment, justice-oriented service, and questions of vocation are familiar parts of student life. That does not mean every student is Catholic or equally observant, but a Catholic student can readily find peers, mentors, and routines that support the faith.

Washington University in St. Louis has an active Catholic Student Center and access to the nearby St. Francis Xavier College Church, providing Mass, fellowship, formation, retreats, and service for students who seek them out. However, WashU is a secular university, and Catholicism is less woven into the broader academic and residential experience. At WashU, the Catholic community can be meaningful and close-knit; at Boston College, it is much more likely to feel like a central part of the institution itself.
