Is WashU or Santa Clara University better for starting a career in Silicon Valley?

The biggest practical tradeoff is immediate Silicon Valley access at Santa Clara versus WashU’s broader national reach and larger residential-university experience. Santa Clara sits in the heart of Silicon Valley, making it much easier to pursue part-time internships, company events, and local networking during the academic year. WashU can lead to excellent tech and business outcomes, but students are more likely to rely on structured recruiting, alumni outreach, and summer internships away from campus.

For a student targeting software, product, startups, or Bay Area business roles, Santa Clara’s location is a meaningful advantage. Its alumni and employer relationships are especially concentrated among regional technology companies, and being nearby can make repeated contact with an employer more realistic than flying in for a summer program. The advantage is strongest when you actively use it through internships, student organizations, and networking rather than assuming proximity alone produces opportunities.

WashU offers a strong foundation through rigorous academics, well-developed career support, and a nationally portable alumni network, particularly through Olin Business School and technical fields. It may be more appealing if you want flexibility to explore careers across several cities or industries, or prefer a more traditional campus environment.
