Which undergraduate nursing program is better for nursing: Washington University in St. Louis or UNC-Chapel Hill?

I’m a high school senior deciding between Washington University in St. Louis and UNC-Chapel Hill for an undergraduate nursing degree. I’m mainly trying to compare the strength of their nursing education and clinical preparation so I can choose the program that will prepare me best for becoming a registered nurse.

For a student whose goal is to earn an undergraduate nursing degree and become an RN immediately after college, UNC-Chapel Hill is the clear fit: it has an established Bachelor of Science in Nursing program designed for RN preparation. Washington University in St. Louis does not offer a traditional undergraduate BSN through the university, so it is not a direct nursing-program alternative to UNC.

UNC’s nursing curriculum combines prerequisite science coursework with upper-level nursing courses, simulation-based learning, and supervised clinical experiences in varied health care settings. Its program is built to prepare students for the NCLEX-RN exam and entry-level practice after graduation.

WashU could make sense for someone who wants a broader undergraduate experience in another field, such as biology, psychology, public health, or a humanities discipline, and plans to enter nursing afterward through an accelerated BSN or graduate-entry nursing path. That route can be valuable, but it adds time and typically additional tuition before RN eligibility.

Compare UNC’s clinical-placement structure, costs, and financial aid package.
