Washington University in St. Louis vs Brown for pre-med: which is better?

Washington University in St. Louis has the edge for pre-med overall. It is unusually pre-med focused, has a major medical school and hospital system tightly connected to the undergraduate campus, and has a long-standing reputation for sending large numbers of students into medical careers.

The biggest differentiator is access to clinical and biomedical opportunities. WashU undergrads benefit from proximity to WashU Medicine, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, and a campus culture where research labs, physicians, and medical volunteering are very visible parts of student life. That makes it easier to find medically relevant experiences early.

Brown’s clearest advantage is academic flexibility. The Open Curriculum can make it easier to explore humanities, social sciences, public health, or other interests without as many distribution requirements, and some students find that freedom helps them protect their GPA and avoid burnout. If you want a less structured path and care a lot about intellectual range outside the sciences, Brown is especially appealing.

On grading, Brown is often seen as the less stressful environment, while WashU has historically had a more intense pre-med reputation. That said, both schools are rigorous, and what matters most is where you think you will actually perform well. If you want the school that is more deliberately set up around pre-med training, research, and clinical access, WashU comes out ahead.
