Which college is better for outdoor activities: WashU or Dartmouth?

The biggest practical difference is that Dartmouth puts outdoor recreation at the center of daily student life in rural New Hampshire, while WashU offers an urban-campus experience with good nearby parks but requires more planning and travel for substantial hiking, camping, or skiing. Dartmouth students can reach trails directly from Hanover, including the Appalachian Trail, and the White Mountains are close enough for frequent weekend trips. Its winter setting also makes skiing, snowshoeing, and other cold-weather activities a normal part of the calendar.

Dartmouth has an especially visible outdoor culture through the Dartmouth Outing Club, one of the country’s oldest and most active collegiate outing organizations. Students can join trips and communities focused on hiking, climbing, paddling, cycling, skiing, and cabins, and Dartmouth operates resources such as the Dartmouth Skiway and the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge. You do not need to be an expert athlete to participate, but students who like being outside will find many peers and traditions built around it.

WashU’s campus is next to Forest Park, a major St. Louis green space that is excellent for running, walking, cycling, picnics, and casual time outdoors. The university has outdoor programming and can organize trips, while regional destinations such as Missouri state parks and the Ozarks make worthwhile weekend excursions. Still, serious hiking and camping are less immediate, and St. Louis does not offer Dartmouth’s easy access to mountain terrain or a comparable ski culture.

For your particular list of interests, Dartmouth is the clear choice. Hiking, camping, and skiing would be far more accessible there, and the outdoor community is likely to shape both your weekends and your social life rather than function mainly as an occasional break from campus.
