Is the University of Maryland or American University more politically active?

The biggest practical difference is that American University puts politics at the center of daily campus life, while the University of Maryland offers political engagement within a much larger, more varied flagship-university environment. American’s Washington, D.C., location, strong School of Public Affairs presence, and concentration of students drawn to government, policy, international affairs, and advocacy make political conversation and event attendance especially visible. Maryland is also politically engaged, but activism shares attention with a wider range of academic, social, athletic, and research communities.

At American, students have unusually convenient access to internships, speakers, think tanks, advocacy organizations, campaigns, and federal institutions during the academic year. Campus groups and events often connect directly to current policy debates in D.C., so it can be easier to turn an interest in political science into frequent off-campus involvement. That atmosphere can feel energizing, though students who want a less politics-saturated social environment may find it intense.

At Maryland, you can still find active political organizations, issue-based activism, student government, voter-engagement efforts, and opportunities connected to Maryland state politics and nearby Washington. Its size means there are more kinds of communities to move among, and a politically interested student may need to be more intentional about seeking out the groups and events that fit their interests. The political scene is real, but it is not as defining of the entire campus identity.

For a student whose priority is being surrounded by politically focused peers and plugging into D.C. advocacy or government work early, American is the more politically active environment overall. Maryland may be the more appealing choice if you want meaningful activism and political science opportunities alongside the breadth and campus life of a large public university.
