The Terrapins have a substantial basketball tradition and annual Big Ten matchups that create a consistent slate of meaningful conference games. Because Maryland is a much larger university, basketball is one major source of school spirit among many, rather than the all-consuming campus focal point it can be at Duke.

For a student who wants basketball to shape friendships, traditions, weekends, and the broader identity of the school, Duke is the more compelling choice. Choose Maryland instead only if you value a larger public-university setting and want strong basketball energy without making access to the most hyped games such a competitive commitment.
