Colby is in Waterville rather than directly in the mountains or on the coast, but its students make frequent organized trips to Maine’s skiing, hiking, paddling, and camping destinations.

Trails through Fall Creek Gorge and Cascadilla Gorge begin essentially on or beside campus, and the Finger Lakes region provides many nearby parks, waterfalls, and lake activities. Colby has a particularly visible outing culture for a small liberal arts college. The Colby Outing Club is a longstanding part of student life and helps make it easier to find companions, borrow equipment, and join trips even as a beginner. Maine offers exceptional destination weekends: downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, backcountry hiking, coastal paddling, and camping. The tradeoff is that many of those marquee experiences require more planning and travel than Cornell’s gorges and local trails.

For a senior who wants frequent, spontaneous outdoor time plus a large university’s resources, Cornell is the more convenient choice. For someone who values a close-knit community where weekend expeditions and outing-club participation are likely to be a central social outlet, Colby may feel more aligned with the outdoor lifestyle you describe.
