Cornell vs. NYU for an Arts Career: Which Offers Stronger Industry Connections?

The biggest practical tradeoff is daily proximity versus a more traditional campus experience: NYU places students in New York City, where galleries, studios, production companies, publishers, arts nonprofits, and working artists are part of the surrounding environment, while Cornell offers a residential Ithaca campus with a smaller local arts market. For careers tied to film, theater, music, fashion, media, commercial art, or arts administration, NYU’s location makes part-time internships, informational interviews, events, and freelance connections far easier to pursue during the academic year.

Cornell can be excellent for students whose artistic direction overlaps with architecture, design, fine arts, technology, or academic study of art. Its College of Architecture, Art, and Planning has a respected professional network. Cornell students can pursue summer internships in major cities and use university-supported programs and alumni contacts, but they will need to be more intentional about traveling and building those relationships because Ithaca is not an everyday industry hub.

The strength of NYU’s network also depends on entering and actively using the right school or program. A Tisch student seeking entertainment work, for example, will encounter a different set of opportunities than an NYU student studying studio art or art history. Likewise, Cornell’s AAP resources are more directly relevant to an aspiring architect, designer, or visual artist than to someone aiming for television production or the music business.

For an arts career where internships and professional networking during college are the priority, NYU has the clearer edge because its New York City setting creates more immediate and frequent access to the industry. Cornell is the more compelling option when its particular academic strengths, especially AAP or a broader interdisciplinary education, match your artistic goals strongly enough to outweigh that location advantage.
