UT Austin vs. Carnegie Mellon for undergraduate artificial intelligence: which is better?

I’m a high school senior interested in studying artificial intelligence as an undergraduate, and I’m considering UT Austin and Carnegie Mellon. I want to understand which school is generally stronger for AI preparation and research opportunities.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Carnegie Mellon offers a more concentrated, AI-centered undergraduate ecosystem, while UT Austin can provide excellent AI preparation within a broader large-university experience. CMU’s School of Computer Science has an undergraduate B.S. in Artificial Intelligence, along with unusually deep access to machine learning, robotics, computer vision, language technologies, and interdisciplinary AI work. UT Austin’s computer science program is also highly respected, with strong faculty and research in AI-related fields, but most students build an AI emphasis within the broader CS curriculum rather than through a standalone AI major.

For research, CMU has the clearer edge in both density and visibility. Its AI-focused labs and institutes create many pathways to projects, seminars, and advanced coursework, although first-year students still need to be proactive about earning research roles. CMU is particularly compelling for students already drawn to areas such as robotics, machine learning theory, natural language processing, or human-centered AI.

UT Austin’s Department of Computer Science, machine learning and AI research groups, and Austin location offer meaningful opportunities, including connections to a major technology ecosystem. A motivated student can reach strong outcomes in AI there, especially by pursuing research early, taking rigorous math and ML courses, and seeking internships. The larger student body can make some opportunities feel less immediately accessible, but it also provides breadth across engineering, business, and other fields.

For undergraduate AI preparation and research intensity alone, Carnegie Mellon is the stronger choice. UT Austin may be the more sensible decision when its lower cost, in-state advantages, campus environment, or broader academic flexibility matter enough to outweigh CMU’s specialized AI advantage.
