How do you write a college activities resume for applications?

I’m a high school junior getting ready to apply to colleges soon, and I keep seeing people mention an activities resume. I’m not sure what it’s supposed to look like or how detailed it should be for clubs, volunteering, work, and other extracurriculars.

I want to make one that is actually useful for applications without sounding padded or too long.

An activities resume for college applications should be clean, one page in most cases, and focused on impact rather than long descriptions. Think of it as a clearer, slightly fuller version of the activities section in an application.

Use simple sections like Education, Activities, Leadership, Work Experience, Volunteer Service, Awards, and Skills if relevant. For each entry, include your role, organization, dates, and a brief description that shows what you did, how often you participated, and any results or responsibility.

Strong descriptions are specific and active. Instead of “Member of debate club,” write “Prepared cases for weekly tournaments, competed at regional events, and mentored new members.” Numbers help when they are real and useful, such as hours per week, money raised, people served, events organized, or years involved.

Prioritize quality over quantity. Put the most important and most committed activities first, even if they are not the most traditional. A part-time job, family responsibility, or long-term independent project can matter just as much as a school club.

Keep formatting plain and readable. Use consistent dates, clear spacing, and short descriptions, usually 1 to 2 lines per activity. Do not turn it into a paragraph-heavy document, and do not inflate titles or list every small event you attended.

A good basic format looks like this:

Name and contact info
High school, graduation year
Activity name | Role | Dates
1 to 2 lines describing responsibilities, leadership, time commitment, and impact
