How should I write strong descriptions for the Common App Activities section?

I’m a high school junior filling out a practice version of the Common App, and I’m not sure how to describe my activities in a way that sounds clear and meaningful without seeming like I’m exaggerating.

I have a mix of school clubs, volunteering, and a part-time job, so I want to understand what makes an activities description strong in the limited space.

Strong Common App activity descriptions are concrete, efficient, and focused on what you actually did. In the small space, the goal is to show role, impact, commitment, and initiative as clearly as possible.

A good formula is: action verb + what you did + scope or result.

Prioritize specifics. Mention leadership, projects, numbers, frequency, or responsibility when relevant.

Use every word carefully. Skip full sentences, articles, and vague adjectives like “passionate,” “dedicated,” or “hardworking” unless the description proves those qualities. Short activity-style phrasing is better than essay-style writing.

For each activity, try to show one or two of these: what you did, who you helped, what changed, or how much responsibility you had. If an activity seems ordinary, the detail is what makes it meaningful.

Also match the description to the actual nature of the activity. For clubs, emphasize contributions, not just attendance. For volunteering, explain the service. For jobs, emphasize accountability, customer interaction, or management. For long-term hobbies, show discipline, output, or progression.

A simple test: after reading the description, could someone understand your role without needing more explanation? If yes, you are on the right track.
