What should I do after submitting the FAFSA to make sure my financial aid is processed?

I already submitted my FAFSA, but I am not sure what the next step is or if I am supposed to do anything else right away.

I am a high school senior and I do not want to miss a deadline or hold up my financial aid because I assumed I was done.

After you submit the FAFSA, monitor for follow-up steps from both the federal processor and each college. Log back into your FAFSA account and make sure it says your form was submitted successfully and then processed. Once processed, review your FAFSA Submission Summary for any errors, missing information, or notices that action is required.

Next, check every college’s financial aid portal or applicant portal. Many schools need additional forms beyond the FAFSA, and they usually list any missing items there. Common examples include verification documents, tax information, proof of citizenship, or school-specific aid forms.

If a college requires the CSS Profile or its own institutional aid application, complete that as soon as possible. Submitting the FAFSA alone is not always enough to be considered for all aid. Also make sure your FAFSA was actually sent to every college on your list.

Watch your email closely, including spam and promotions folders. Financial aid offices often contact students if they need clarification or documents.

Check state aid deadlines and requirements, since some state grants are first-come, first-served or need extra steps. If you are selected for verification, respond quickly because schools cannot finalize aid until that process is complete.

Once admissions decisions come out, review each financial aid offer carefully and compare grants, loans, work-study, and any conditions for keeping the aid. If anything in your family finances changes, contact the financial aid office directly.
