Is Boston College or Georgetown better for preparing for a legal career?

The biggest practical difference is location: Georgetown places you in Washington, D.C., with unusually direct access to federal agencies, congressional offices, policy organizations, public-interest groups, courts, and law firms, while Boston College connects you to Boston’s strong legal, business, health-care, and state-government communities. Its proximity to Georgetown Law also creates access to law-related talks and programming, though it does not confer an admissions advantage to the law school.

Boston College can provide excellent law-school preparation through rigorous writing- and reading-intensive coursework, pre-law advising, and access to the Boston legal market. BC’s Jesuit liberal-arts environment may be particularly appealing if you want a smaller-scale undergraduate community, close faculty relationships, and a curriculum grounded in ethics and service. Boston College Law School is part of the university as well, but undergraduates should not choose BC expecting a formal pipeline into it.

For law school admissions, your college GPA, LSAT or other applicable admissions test performance, sustained intellectual engagement, writing ability, and recommendations will matter much more than the undergraduate institution’s name or proximity to a law school. At either school, major in a subject you genuinely enjoy and can excel in; political science is not required.

For preparation and legal-career connections alone, Georgetown has the edge because D.C. makes substantive legal and policy internships easier to pursue during the academic year. Choose Boston College instead if its campus culture, academic offerings, or financial package would make you more likely to thrive and earn the strongest possible record.
