How do you ask a college for more financial aid after being accepted?

I got into a college I really like, but the financial aid package is still more than my family can realistically afford. I am trying to figure out the right way to ask for more aid without sounding rude or like I am complaining.

I am a senior, and this is one of my top choices if the cost can come down. I want to know what the normal process is for asking a college to reconsider a financial aid offer.

The normal process is to submit a financial aid appeal, sometimes called a request for reconsideration. Start by checking the college’s financial aid website or portal, because many schools have a specific form and list of required documents.

If there is no form, email the financial aid office and politely ask about their appeal process. Say you’re grateful for the offer, that the school is a top choice, and that the current cost is not workable for your family.

Your appeal is strongest if you include a clear reason. Common reasons include a recent job loss, reduced income, high medical expenses, a change in family circumstances, one-time income on the tax return that no longer reflects reality, or a better aid offer from a similar college.

Be specific and document everything. That might mean recent pay stubs, a letter explaining changed circumstances, medical bills, unemployment documentation, or a competing financial aid award letter.

In your message, briefly include your student ID, the amount your family can realistically afford if you know it, and the gap between that number and the current package.

A simple structure is: thank them, explain the financial gap, state the reason for reconsideration, attach supporting documents, and ask whether your award can be reviewed. If another school gave you more aid, mention that respectfully without making it sound like a threat.
