Is Cornell or the University of Virginia better for a career in hotel management?

The biggest practical difference is specialization: Cornell offers a dedicated undergraduate hotel administration degree with hospitality-specific coursework, recruiting, and alumni connections, while UVA offers a broader liberal arts and business pathway without an undergraduate hotel-management school. For someone who already knows they want hotel operations, development, revenue management, or brand leadership, that difference is substantial.

Cornell’s Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration is built around the hotel and hospitality industry. Students study business fundamentals alongside areas such as hotel operations, food and beverage, real estate, marketing, and hospitality finance, and they gain access to a particularly deep “Hotelie” alumni network. Its location within the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business also makes it possible to combine hospitality preparation with strong business and real-estate exposure.

At UVA, a student could prepare for hospitality through economics, management, or the McIntire School of Commerce, then pursue hotel internships and industry roles. That route can be excellent for a student who wants a broad business education and may later pivot into consulting, finance, or another field. However, the student would need to be more proactive about building hospitality knowledge, securing relevant internships, and finding hotel-industry mentors because the infrastructure is not as concentrated.

For a career specifically in hotel management, Cornell is the more direct and better-aligned choice. UVA makes more sense only if you value its broader academic experience enough to accept a less specialized path into hospitality.
