Does Columbia or Yale offer a more realistic path for students applying as transfers?

Columbia offers the more realistic transfer path for a traditional undergraduate. It has a well-established transfer admission process for Columbia College and Columbia Engineering, while Yale’s Yale College transfer intake is intentionally very small and highly selective. Columbia also has the School of General Studies, which serves many nontraditional students, though it is not a substitute for the regular Columbia College transfer route.

Credit flexibility is another practical consideration. Columbia will review prior coursework, but its Core requirements mean some students need additional time to graduate or cannot receive credit for every class taken elsewhere. Yale also requires transfer students to complete substantial Yale College coursework and does not make transferring a shortcut to a Yale degree. In either case, starting at an accredited four-year college, earning excellent grades in rigorous courses, and building a clear reason for transferring would matter far more than high school credentials alone.
