Is Columbia or NYU generally easier to transfer into?

The biggest practical difference is that Columbia’s traditional undergraduate divisions treat transfer admission as a very limited, highly selective process, while NYU has a larger and more established transfer pathway across many of its schools. At Columbia College and Columbia Engineering, applicants need an unusually strong academic record in demanding college coursework and a clear reason the specific Columbia program is necessary for their goals. NYU also expects solid college grades and appropriate prerequisites, but it typically enrolls a broader transfer cohort and has clearer program-by-program transfer guidance.

Neither option is a reliable plan to use as a “back door” after high school. Both schools will look closely at how rigorous your first-year courses are, your performance in classes related to your intended major, your reasons for leaving your current college, and whether you can make academic progress without losing excessive credits. NYU’s professional and capacity-constrained programs can still be especially difficult to enter, so the school and major matter substantially.

Columbia’s School of General Studies has a separate admissions process designed for students with nontraditional educational paths, such as significant time away from school, military service, or substantial work obligations. A typical student transferring directly after one year elsewhere should evaluate Columbia College or Columbia Engineering rather than assume General Studies is an easier equivalent route.

For a conventional transfer applicant coming from another college, NYU is generally the more transfer-friendly option. Columbia can be worth applying to when its particular curriculum, faculty, or program is central to your academic plan, but it should be treated as the more difficult transfer target.
