Is Columbia or Harvard harder to get into as a transfer student?

The biggest practical difference is that Harvard’s transfer process is built around filling an exceptionally small number of places, while Columbia offers several distinct undergraduate pathways whose transfer policies and applicant pools differ. At Harvard, transfer admits tend to present unusually strong college-level achievement plus a compelling reason their current institution cannot provide what they need. Columbia College and Columbia Engineering are also highly selective for transfers, but Columbia’s School of General Studies is a separate program designed for nontraditional students and should not be treated as equivalent to transferring into Columbia College.

For a high school senior planning ahead, neither school should be viewed as a predictable “transfer option.” Harvard will expect a demanding first-year college record, strong faculty recommendations, and evidence of meaningful accomplishment beyond simply earning high grades. A student who enrolls elsewhere mainly because they hope to transfer to Harvard later is unlikely to have a strategic advantage.

At Columbia, the right comparison depends on the school. Columbia College and Engineering want applicants with clear academic preparation for their intended program and a well-developed academic reason to transfer. General Studies may be relevant only for students whose educational path includes a significant interruption, professional experience, military service, caregiving, or another nontraditional circumstance.

Between Harvard transfer admission and transfer admission to Columbia College or Columbia Engineering, Harvard is typically the more difficult target because of the extraordinarily limited space available and the exceptional level of distinction expected from admitted transfers. Columbia is still a reach at every undergraduate division, and the best plan is to enroll at a college where you would be genuinely happy to complete your degree.
