How does student life differ between Columbia University and the University of Vermont?

For a student drawn to a fast-paced, city-centered college experience, Columbia offers the more immersive urban lifestyle; UVM feels more like a traditional residential campus with unusually easy access to the outdoors. At Columbia, students live and study in Morningside Heights but regularly treat New York City as an extension of campus. At UVM, daily life is more anchored in Burlington, the campus community, and Lake Champlain.

Columbia’s atmosphere tends to be academically intense and highly scheduled. The Core Curriculum creates common intellectual reference points across many students’ first years, while lectures, internships, performances, museums, and dinners in different neighborhoods can fill evenings and weekends. Social life often happens through dorms, student organizations, campus events, and small groups making plans around the city rather than at a self-contained campus center.

UVM has a more relaxed, outdoors-oriented rhythm. Students often spend free time on the Burlington waterfront, biking, skiing or snowboarding nearby, hiking, visiting Church Street, or gathering at campus and apartment social events. Burlington is a real small city with restaurants, music, and local businesses, but it is far less overwhelming and expensive to navigate day to day than New York.

Columbia offers exceptional variety and easy access to people and events beyond the university, but students need to be proactive about building a close routine amid the city’s constant distractions. UVM’s smaller, more contained setting can make it easier to repeatedly see the same people and develop a familiar campus community, especially for students who enjoy outdoor recreation and a less career-driven daily pace.
