Is NYU or George Washington University better for building a career in Washington, DC?

For a student whose main goal is to build a public-policy or political career in Washington, DC, George Washington University offers the more direct and sustained advantage. Its Foggy Bottom campus is within walking distance of major federal agencies, the White House area, think tanks, advocacy organizations, and international institutions, making part-time internships during the academic year far more practical. GW also has a campus culture built around students working in government, campaigns, nonprofits, consulting, and policy organizations while enrolled.

You can pursue internships across multiple semesters, attend policy events after class, develop relationships with supervisors and alumni locally, and test different corners of politics or public service before graduation. Its political science, international affairs, and related programs connect naturally to the city’s professional ecosystem.

NYU can still make sense for a student drawn to public policy through New York City, especially interests such as urban policy, media, law, finance, philanthropy, or international organizations. NYU students can access DC-focused programming and internships, but DC is not the everyday setting in the way it is at GW. Building a DC network from NYU often requires more intentional use of summers, a DC semester, or post-graduation relocation.

For long-term DC career access, the difference is less about the name on the diploma than about repeated in-person exposure. At GW, it is easier to turn an initial internship into a second role, a recommendation, and a local professional network before senior year. NYU may be the more compelling choice only if its New York-based opportunities or academic offerings fit your interests substantially better than GW’s.
