Should I choose USC or NYU for a creative career?

I’m a high school senior deciding between USC and NYU, and I’m interested in building a career in the creative industries. I’m trying to understand how the two schools differ in ways that matter for creative students, especially their industry connections, location, and opportunities to build a portfolio.

USC is the more advantageous choice for a creative career aimed at film, television, gaming, music, or the Los Angeles entertainment business. Its School of Cinematic Arts, Annenberg programs, and strong alumni presence in Hollywood put students close to studios, production companies, agencies, and entertainment startups. NYU is especially compelling when your work is more connected to theater, publishing, advertising, fashion, visual art, or New York’s independent media scene.

Location affects the kind of professional network you build while still in school. At USC, internships, guest speakers, and alumni connections are often tied to the screen and entertainment industries concentrated in Los Angeles. At NYU, Manhattan makes it easier to engage with theaters, galleries, publishers, ad agencies, fashion organizations, and smaller creative collectives, though students often need to be more proactive about navigating opportunities across the city.

For portfolio-building, the deciding factor is less the school name than the structure of your program. USC tends to offer a more campus-centered experience, with access to organized production teams, creative collaborators, and established entertainment-oriented resources. NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts supports substantial artistic work as well, but its experience can feel more decentralized because the city itself functions as an extension of campus.

USC also has an advantage for students who want creative work combined with business and entrepreneurship: entertainment-focused coursework and cross-campus connections can make it practical to learn both how projects are made and how they are financed, marketed, and distributed. NYU can provide similar crossover opportunities, particularly through its New York professional setting, but USC’s network is unusually concentrated around the commercial entertainment ecosystem.

The most useful test is the work you want in your portfolio by graduation. A short film, game prototype, television pitch, or entertainment marketing campaign points strongly toward USC; a theater project, fashion portfolio, gallery practice, magazine work, or independent New York media project makes NYU’s setting especially valuable.
