That can feel especially welcoming to someone who wants a close-knit, classic residential-college atmosphere, though students who do not connect with Greek life may need to be intentional about finding their own circles.

UW–Madison has extensive student organizations and many ways to meet people through residence halls, classes, campus events, and Madison itself. Its size means there is room for nearly any interest or identity, but it can initially feel less immediately intimate. A new student who joins a few groups early and spends time in their residence community can find a strong network there.

For the specific goal of feeling welcomed quickly as an incoming freshman, Miami University of Ohio is likely the more naturally approachable setting because of its smaller, more contained residential community. UW–Madison can be equally rewarding socially, but it tends to reward students who are comfortable taking the lead in building their community.
