At Williams, small classes, close advising, and substantial independent work can make it easier to develop the sustained faculty relationships that lead to detailed recommendation letters. Its tutorial-style offerings and senior thesis culture can be particularly strong preparation for the reading, writing, discussion, and self-directed inquiry central to many humanities and social-science PhDs. Williams students also conduct research, including summer work with faculty, but the number of niches and specialized facilities is naturally narrower.

For most prospective PhD students, Northwestern has the edge when your intended field depends heavily on extensive lab infrastructure or a broad menu of specialized research groups. Williams may be the more compelling preparation when you value intensive undergraduate teaching, close mentorship, and an environment where you are likely to take on major intellectual responsibility early.
