How should I choose between Georgia Tech and Purdue for aerospace engineering?

I’m a high school senior deciding between Georgia Tech and Purdue for aerospace engineering. Both programs seem strong, so I’m trying to understand which factors should matter most when comparing them, such as curriculum, hands-on opportunities, recruiting, and overall fit.

The biggest practical tradeoff is Georgia Tech’s location and engineering ecosystem in Atlanta versus Purdue’s more traditional, aerospace-centered campus experience in West Lafayette. Both have highly respected, ABET-accredited aerospace bachelor’s programs and strong employer recognition, so neither choice will close doors in the aerospace industry. Cost, residency, and how you learn outside class should carry at least as much weight as small perceived differences in prestige.

At Georgia Tech, the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering sits within a major urban technology hub. Purdue’s School of Aeronautics and Astronautics has a deep aerospace identity and a large, collaborative engineering campus. Its hands-on culture is a meaningful advantage for students drawn to design-build-test work, technical student organizations, propulsion, flight, space systems, and large-scale engineering facilities. West Lafayette is less urban, but Purdue’s engineering recruiting, alumni network, career fairs, research opportunities, and co-op/internship pipelines are exceptionally established. Purdue may feel more like an immersive engineering college town, with aerospace peers and activities concentrated around campus.

Compare the actual first- and second-year course plans, not just department names. Look at when each school lets you enter aerospace-specific classes, the availability of undergraduate research or project teams, and whether you can realistically afford unpaid or lower-paid summer research if that interests you. Visit or attend admitted-student programming if possible, and ask current aerospace students how easy it is to join a lab, obtain faculty mentorship, and balance engineering coursework with project teams.

Choose Georgia Tech if Atlanta access, interdisciplinary technology opportunities, and an urban setting genuinely fit how you want to build experience. Choose Purdue if you are most energized by a concentrated aerospace culture and a classic, hands-on engineering-campus environment.
