Is the University of Minnesota or the University of Wisconsin–Madison more academically prestigious?

I’m a high school senior comparing the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. I’m trying to understand which school generally has the stronger overall academic reputation, rather than comparing a specific major.

For overall academic reputation, the University of Wisconsin–Madison is more widely viewed as the more prestigious of the two. It has a particularly strong national profile as a flagship public research university, a long-established graduate and professional-school presence, and broad name recognition beyond the Midwest. That perception can carry some extra weight in national recruiting and in fields where institutional reputation is a meaningful first signal.

Wisconsin–Madison tends to suit a student who wants a large, highly visible flagship with an academically intense peer environment and a campus identity closely tied to research, public policy, science, business, and the liberal arts. For a student who is choosing partly on the basis of the school name’s broad national familiarity, Madison has the edge.

The University of Minnesota Twin Cities is still a major, well-respected research university, not a lesser-quality academic experience. It has substantial research opportunities in a major metropolitan area. A student who values access to the Twin Cities, internships, healthcare and corporate connections, or a particular Minnesota program may find that it offers the more useful undergraduate experience.
