Which has the stronger alumni network for career opportunities: University of Maryland or Penn State?

I’m a high school senior deciding between the University of Maryland and Penn State, and I’m especially interested in how useful each school’s alumni network is after graduation. I care about alumni accessibility, mentoring, and connections across different industries, not just the size of the network.

Penn State has the stronger alumni network for broad career opportunities, particularly in terms of alumni culture, organized engagement, and national reach.

That reach is especially useful if you may work outside the Mid-Atlantic after graduation or are exploring several industries.

Maryland’s network is highly valuable, but its clearest advantage is concentration around Washington, D.C. Maryland also offers Terrapins Connect for alumni and student networking, so a student who actively uses that platform and attends D.C.-area events can build an excellent network.

At Maryland, the quality of connections may depend more on your major and how deliberately you plug into D.C.-area organizations, internships, and alumni programming. A Maryland student targeting a D.C.-centered career could find the local network more immediately useful, while Penn State provides a more consistently expansive alumni infrastructure across locations and fields.
