How should I choose between UIUC and the University of Maryland for computer science?

I’m a high school senior deciding where to apply for computer science, and I’m considering both UIUC and the University of Maryland. I’m interested in strong academics and career preparation, but I’m not sure how to compare the two programs based on overall fit.

For a student prioritizing the deepest pure computer science ecosystem and broad national tech recruiting, UIUC is the more compelling choice; choose Maryland instead when its price is meaningfully lower or you want to build a career around the Washington, D.C., region. Maryland’s program is also rigorous and well regarded, so this is not a choice between a strong program and a weak one.

Academically, UIUC gives students unusual breadth to explore areas such as systems, artificial intelligence, theory, programming languages, graphics, and human-computer interaction. Its large scale can create more course and research possibilities, though students need to be proactive about navigating a big department. Maryland’s Computer Science program provides a more compact setting while remaining especially connected to work in cybersecurity, machine learning, computing infrastructure, and public-sector technology.

The career geography differs sharply. UIUC has a longstanding national pipeline into major technology companies, startups, and engineering employers. Maryland’s College Park location creates unusually direct access to federal agencies, research labs, defense and cybersecurity employers, and internships throughout D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia.

Campus environment and net cost should carry real weight. Urbana-Champaign is a classic, self-contained college town where much of student life centers on campus; College Park is a suburban campus with easy access to D.C. and its cultural and professional opportunities. Compare the four-year net price, not just the first-year offer: a substantial in-state advantage or scholarship at Maryland can outweigh UIUC’s extra program depth, while similar costs make UIUC’s scale and CS reputation difficult to pass up.
