Is admission to UIUC or Santa Clara University more difficult for computer science applicants?

I’m a high school senior deciding where to apply for computer science, and I’m trying to understand which school is generally more selective for applicants in this major. I’m not looking for current acceptance rates, but for a broader comparison of how difficult admission tends to be.

For a student applying specifically to computer science, UIUC is typically the more difficult admission target. Computer science in UIUC’s Grainger College of Engineering draws an exceptionally deep pool of applicants with very strong math, science, and programming preparation, and UIUC reviews applicants in the context of their requested major. Its CS-related options, including CS + X programs, should not be treated as easy alternatives.

UIUC fits applicants whose record shows sustained, high-level quantitative preparation: the most rigorous math and science courses available, excellent performance in them, and meaningful evidence of technical curiosity. That evidence can come from a project, research, a job, a course, or a carefully developed independent interest; it does not need to be a long list of coding competitions. Because space in CS is limited, even applicants who look academically outstanding on paper can face a very uncertain outcome.

Santa Clara University is also selective for computer science and should not be considered a safety simply because UIUC CS is harder to enter. It may be especially attractive to students drawn to a smaller private university, close faculty access, and Silicon Valley internships and industry connections. Strong grades in rigorous coursework still matter substantially, particularly in math and science.

In practical application planning, UIUC CS belongs in the high-reach category for nearly every applicant. Santa Clara CS can remain a reach or possible target depending on the student’s academic record and course rigor, but it is ordinarily the less difficult of these two CS admissions paths.
