University of Florida vs. American University: Which is better for studying public policy?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location: American University places public-policy students in Washington, D.C., with routine access to federal agencies, advocacy organizations, think tanks, and policy internships, while the University of Florida offers a larger flagship-university environment with substantial research resources and a different, less policy-centered professional setting in Gainesville. For an undergraduate focused specifically on entering policy work, the D.C. access can shape internships, networking, and course-connected experiences throughout all four years.

American’s School of Public Affairs is a central strength. Its undergraduate public policy and related programs are embedded in a school devoted to government, political science, justice, and public affairs, so students are surrounded by peers and faculty working directly in those fields. Washington also makes it more feasible to intern during the academic year rather than limiting most experience to summers.

UF can still provide excellent preparation, particularly through political science, economics, public affairs-related coursework, and policy-oriented research and civic engagement opportunities. Its scale gives students a wider range of academic departments and campus organizations, and Florida politics, state government, environmental policy, health policy, and education policy can be especially meaningful areas to explore. UF may also be the more compelling option when it is substantially more affordable, since graduate school is common in many policy careers.

For the stronger overall undergraduate launch into a public-policy career, American University has the edge because its School of Public Affairs and D.C. setting create more immediate, sustained access to policy practice. UF is a sound choice when its cost advantage is major or when you want a broader large-university experience and are prepared to seek policy internships proactively, including in Tallahassee and during summers.
