Is Carnegie Mellon or UIUC more affordable for engineering?

For an Illinois resident, UIUC will almost always be substantially more affordable than Carnegie Mellon before financial aid. UIUC’s in-state tuition and fees are set at a much lower public-university rate, while Carnegie Mellon charges the same high private-university tuition regardless of where a student lives. Living costs in Champaign-Urbana also tend to be more manageable than in Pittsburgh, though housing choices matter at either school.

Carnegie Mellon can make financial sense for a student whose need-based aid or merit scholarship meaningfully closes the gap. Its engineering programs are excellent, but the sticker price is typically far above UIUC’s in-state cost, and CMU does not offer an Illinois-resident discount. Do not assume that a private university’s aid will match a public in-state price; compare each school’s actual aid offer, including grants versus loans and work-study.

The practical comparison is net cost over four years, not one year’s published tuition. Once both offers arrive, subtract only grants and scholarships from the full cost of attendance, then account for loan borrowing, travel home, health insurance requirements, and whether either award is renewable under specific GPA or enrollment conditions.
