How does undergraduate research funding compare at Carnegie Mellon and UC Berkeley?

Carnegie Mellon is likely the more predictable choice if your priority is finding a clearly identified, paid undergraduate research pathway early on. Departments and individual labs may also hire undergraduates with grant funding, particularly once a student has relevant coursework or technical skills.

At UC Berkeley, the volume and range of research are enormous, but funding is more decentralized and can be less straightforward to access. Berkeley’s Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP), one of the most common entry points into faculty research, is often done for academic credit rather than wages.

This does not mean Berkeley students must accept unpaid research. A proactive student can find funded positions, especially in well-supported STEM labs, through faculty-funded roles. But the first research opportunity may be unpaid or credit-based, and funding availability can depend heavily on the particular professor and field.

CMU may fit a student who wants a smaller research environment with more visible institutional pathways and a clearer plan for converting research into a funded summer experience. Berkeley may suit someone comfortable navigating a much larger ecosystem, where the number of labs and projects is exceptionally broad but the route to paid work can require more persistence and targeted outreach. At either school, ask your intended department how many first- and second-year students are paid as research assistants, since that answer will be more revealing than a university-wide promise.
