How does Carnegie Mellon’s campus size compare with Purdue’s?

Carnegie Mellon has the more compact, walkable campus. Most academic buildings, residence halls, and major student spaces sit close together around the central Quad and are typically reachable within a short walk.

Purdue feels substantially larger and more spread out. Bikes, buses, and scooters are much more common parts of daily movement there.

CMU’s setting is urban and vertically layered, with hills and stairways that can make short distances feel more physically demanding. Still, navigation is straightforward because the campus footprint is concentrated.

Purdue has a more traditional large-university layout: broad open areas, long streets of academic buildings, extensive residence-hall zones, and more separation between districts. For someone who wants to cross campus quickly on foot and feel surrounded by a tight academic hub, Carnegie Mellon will feel noticeably smaller. For someone who likes the scale, activity, and space of a major public research university, Purdue’s campus has that larger-campus energy.
