How do Rice and UT Austin compare in undergraduate admissions difficulty?

Rice is typically more difficult to enter. It enrolls a much smaller undergraduate class, attracts a highly self-selecting national and international pool, and does not have a Texas automatic-admission pathway that reserves many seats for top in-state students.

Rice is especially demanding for students whose records are strong across the board: rigorous coursework, excellent grades, meaningful involvement, and a clear personal contribution to its residential-college community. Its process is holistic rather than driven by a particular undergraduate major, so a student cannot count on choosing a less crowded major to create a noticeably easier route.

UT Austin is also highly selective, but its difficulty looks different depending on residency and major. Texas residents who qualify for automatic admission have a significant structural advantage for admission to the university, although automatic admission does not guarantee placement in a first-choice major. Applicants outside that pathway face a much more competitive review.

At UT Austin, intended major can matter substantially. Computer science, engineering, business, and several other high-demand programs can be exceptionally difficult, sometimes making admission to a specific program comparable to, or tougher than, the challenge of Rice for a particular applicant.

For a Texas student with automatic-admission eligibility and a flexible major plan, UT Austin may be more attainable than Rice. For an out-of-state applicant, or for someone targeting UT Austin’s most capacity-limited majors, both schools should be treated as highly selective reaches, with Rice still the tougher overall institutional admit.
