How do Rice and Georgetown compare for admissions difficulty in general?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Rice tends to have a smaller undergraduate intake and a more concentrated applicant pool, while Georgetown draws a broader national and international applicant base with several distinct schools and application patterns. In general, both are very hard to get into, but for a typical applicant Rice is often perceived as slightly harder or at least equally difficult in a more consistently selective way. Georgetown is absolutely in the same tier of selectivity, but its admissions landscape can feel a bit more variable depending on which school within Georgetown you are applying to.

Rice’s applicant pool is usually very self-selecting, with many students applying because they specifically want its residential college culture, strong STEM reputation, and smaller campus environment. That can make the competition feel especially intense because a large share of applicants are already highly qualified and intentionally targeting Rice.

Georgetown is also extremely selective, but it has a somewhat different shape. Its School of Foreign Service, for example, can be especially competitive, and the university’s location in Washington, DC plus strengths in politics, international relations, business, and policy attract a huge range of strong applicants. At the same time, the overall admissions difficulty can vary a little more by school and applicant profile than people often assume.

If you are building a balanced list, I would treat both Rice and Georgetown as reaches for most students unless your academic profile is clearly at the very top of each school’s applicant pool. Between the two, I would give Rice a slight edge for raw admissions difficulty in the broadest sense, but not by enough that one belongs in a meaningfully different category from the other.
