How does undergraduate teaching compare at Columbia and Williams?

For close, discussion-heavy teaching and routine access to professors, Williams offers the more consistently undergraduate-centered experience. Columbia can offer outstanding undergraduate teaching and serious intellectual engagement, but students should expect a larger university environment where access often depends more on choosing smaller courses, attending office hours, and taking initiative.

Williams suits a student who wants professors to know them well across several courses, prefers seminars over large lectures, and values frequent feedback on writing and ideas. Faculty members’ primary institutional focus is undergraduate education. The tutorial program is especially valuable for students who enjoy sustained reading, independent argument, and direct critique, though it is not the default format for every course.

Columbia fits a student energized by a research university, New York City, and the breadth of courses, speakers, and scholarly resources that come with them. The Core Curriculum gives many undergraduates small, intensive discussion sections, creating a shared intellectual foundation and helping counterbalance the scale of the university.
