Columbia vs. UPenn: Which University Has a Better Social Life?

For most students prioritizing an easy-to-find, active, campus-centered social community, Penn has the stronger social life. Its compact West Philadelphia campus concentrates students around College Green, Locust Walk, residence halls, athletic events, student organizations, and a visible fraternity/sorority scene. That layout makes casual encounters and last-minute plans feel more built into daily life.

Penn also has a notably social weekend culture, with many events, parties, performances, cultural groups, and club activities taking place on or immediately around campus. The school’s preprofessional energy is real, but it coexists with a strong tradition of students going out together, especially within dorm communities, Greek life, and large student organizations. Students who do not join Greek life can still find plenty of social circles, though some party activity is connected to it.

Columbia offers an excellent but less centralized version of social life. The Core Curriculum can create close friendships because students share major intellectual experiences, and campus organizations, residence halls, and traditions around Morningside Heights provide community. However, New York City also pulls students in many directions: friends may meet for dinner, concerts, internships, or neighborhood activities rather than gathering at one dominant campus event.

At Columbia, making friends often requires more intentional involvement in a dorm, club, identity-based organization, performing arts group, or academic community. The payoff is access to an unusually broad social world beyond campus, but it can feel more fragmented than Penn’s. For a senior who wants a classic, highly visible undergraduate social scene, Penn is likely to feel more immediately connected.
