Is NYU or Georgetown More Affordable for College?

Georgetown is typically the more affordable option on its published annual cost of attendance, largely because NYU’s New York City housing and day-to-day living estimates tend to be higher. Both are high-cost private universities, so neither should be judged by tuition alone. For students with substantial demonstrated financial need, the final net price can be much closer and may even reverse depending on each school’s aid calculation.

NYU’s biggest cost pressure is location. Many students live in university housing or the surrounding Manhattan area, where housing, food, and personal expenses can make the overall budget notably expensive.

Georgetown’s Washington, D.C., setting is also costly, but its campus-centered first-year residential experience and published living budget are often somewhat less expensive than NYU’s. Its calculation of “demonstrated need,” however, may not match a family’s own sense of what it can pay.

The most useful comparison is each school’s net price calculator, using the same parent income, assets, household size, and sibling-in-college information. Compare the resulting grant amounts and the four-year outlook, not just the first-year bill.
