How do USC and Boston University compare for international student support?

The biggest practical difference is that USC offers a more self-contained, campus-centered adjustment experience in Los Angeles, while BU’s support operates within a dense urban campus spread along Commonwealth Avenue in Boston. Both schools have dedicated international-student offices that advise on immigration status, work authorization, travel, and required reporting, so neither choice leaves students without core visa support.

At USC, the Office of International Services provides immigration advising, orientation programming, and guidance on CPT and OPT. USC’s central University Park campus, extensive residential life, and many cultural and international student organizations can make it easier to build a social routine and find services without first learning an entire city. The tradeoff is that USC is a large institution, so students may still need to be proactive about appointments and navigating separate offices for housing, academics, health, and financial matters.

BU’s International Students and Scholars Office similarly handles visa and employment guidance and offers programming for new international students. BU can be especially appealing for students who want daily life integrated with a major city: public transit, internships, neighborhoods, and Boston’s large student population are immediately accessible.
