USC vs. McGill: Which Is Better for International Students?

For an international student prioritizing a structured support system, a residential campus experience, and career access in the United States, USC has the edge over McGill. USC’s Office of International Services provides immigration advising and programming, while its private-university setting tends to make academic advising, student organizations, and alumni networking feel more centralized. Its Los Angeles location also gives students proximity to a large range of internships in media, technology, business, and the arts.

McGill may offer the more internationally mixed day-to-day environment. Montreal is a comparatively accessible, student-oriented city with strong public transit and a distinct cultural life. McGill’s International Student Services supports immigration and transition issues, but the university’s large, urban, public-facing environment can require more independence in navigating housing, advising, and community-building than USC’s campus-centered model.

Post-graduation plans are an important practical difference. USC graduates who want to work in the U.S. can pursue Optional Practical Training, with possible additional time for eligible STEM degrees, but longer-term U.S. work authorization is often employer- and visa-dependent. Canada’s post-graduation work permit pathway can be more straightforward for graduates who hope to gain Canadian work experience and potentially remain in Canada, subject to current eligibility rules.

Cost and lifestyle can also shift the answer. USC’s tuition and Los Angeles living expenses are substantial, though institutional aid may change the actual cost. McGill can be less expensive for some international students, but Montreal housing, winter weather, and the practical value of French outside the classroom deserve serious consideration.
