Is USC or Purdue More Affordable After Financial Aid?

For an Indiana resident who does not qualify for substantial need-based aid, Purdue will often produce the lower net cost because its in-state tuition and fees are far below USC’s private-university price. For an out-of-state student with high demonstrated financial need, however, USC can be surprisingly competitive or even less expensive after institutional grants, while Purdue’s need-based assistance may not close as much of the nonresident cost.

Compare each school using its own Net Price Calculator, entered with the same current tax, income, asset, household-size, and sibling-in-college information. Treat the calculator result as an estimate, then compare the actual aid offers line by line: grants and scholarships reduce cost; loans, parent borrowing, and work-study do not reduce the bill in the same way.

Include tuition, mandatory fees, housing, food, books, travel, health insurance if applicable, and personal expenses. USC’s Los Angeles location can make off-campus housing and travel more expensive, whereas Purdue’s West Lafayette costs may be more manageable, but your own housing plan matters more than published averages.

USC may be the financially sensible choice for a student receiving a large need-based grant or a major USC merit scholarship. Purdue is often the value choice for Indiana residents, students with modest aid eligibility, or students whose Purdue scholarship makes the remaining bill clearly lower. Also compare whether renewable scholarships have GPA, enrollment, or housing conditions, and project the net cost across all four years rather than deciding from one first-year offer.
