Is USC or the University of Washington more affordable for a Washington resident?

For a Washington resident, the biggest practical tradeoff is UW’s much lower in-state price versus USC’s potential to reduce its higher private-school cost through need-based aid or merit scholarships. UW charges Washington residents a substantially lower tuition rate than out-of-state students, while USC charges the same high private tuition regardless of state residency. Housing and living expenses can be significant at either campus, but they usually do not erase UW’s in-state tuition advantage.

UW’s resident tuition, access to state-oriented aid for eligible Washington students, and the option to live at home or in the Seattle area can make the total cost especially manageable. UW’s financial aid package should still be compared carefully, since costs differ between on-campus housing, off-campus leases, meals, transportation, and personal expenses.

USC can become competitive only in particular financial situations. Because it is a private institution, it may offer institutional need-based grant aid that is stronger than a family expects from its sticker price, and some applicants receive merit awards. Those awards are selective and should not be treated as guaranteed; unless USC’s net price estimate and eventual aid offer bring its cost close to UW’s, the private-school premium will remain substantial.

Apply to both if USC is a serious academic or personal preference, run each school’s official net price calculator before applying, and compare the final grants rather than loans or work-study. Absent an unusually strong USC aid or scholarship offer, UW is likely to be more affordable for a Washington resident.
