Harvard vs. Carnegie Mellon for a Tech Career: Which Offers Better Value?
I’m a high school senior deciding between Harvard and Carnegie Mellon for a computer science-related path. I’m interested in software engineering and possibly graduate school, and both schools would be major financial commitments for my family. I’m trying to understand which school generally provides stronger value for building a career in tech.

The biggest practical tradeoff is breadth versus early technical immersion: Carnegie Mellon puts computer science at the center of the undergraduate experience, while Harvard combines strong CS access with a much broader liberal-arts environment and alumni network. For software engineering recruiting, CMU has an unusually deep technical reputation, a dense peer group of programmers, and coursework that can prepare students quickly for demanding engineering interviews and internships. If the net costs are close and you are confident that you want an intensive, CS-focused undergraduate experience, Carnegie Mellon is likely the more direct investment for a software engineering path. If Harvard is meaningfully less expensive, or you value academic exploration and the option to blend technology with fields such as economics, policy, entrepreneurship, or the humanities, Harvard provides outstanding value without closing tech-career or graduate-school doors.
