Compare the four-year net price, not the headline grant. Put each school’s billed costs, institutional grants and scholarships, federal grants, expected parent contribution, work expectation, and any loans on one sheet. Confirm whether a scholarship is guaranteed for all four years, what academic or enrollment conditions apply, and how each college treats home equity, noncustodial-parent finances, savings, and a sibling in college.

Also include expenses that may not appear prominently in the initial award: health insurance, travel, books, personal costs, and Chicago versus Cambridge housing and living expenses. Since your family’s finances are stable, ask each aid office for a written clarification of the expected family contribution for the coming year and whether the award would change if a sibling enrolls in college or income shifts modestly.
