How does student social life compare at Georgetown University and UCLA?

For a more campus-centered, intimate social environment, Georgetown has the edge; UCLA offers a larger, more varied scene that begins on campus but extends much more visibly into Los Angeles. Georgetown’s smaller undergraduate community and walkable, contained campus make it easier for social circles to overlap through dorms, student organizations, basketball culture, and gatherings in nearby Georgetown.

At Georgetown, many students spend their early years socializing on or immediately around campus, especially along M Street and Wisconsin Avenue. Washington, D.C. is a real part of student life, but it is not as effortless to access spontaneously as Westwood and the rest of Los Angeles are for UCLA students; students often use public transit or plan outings. The atmosphere can feel polished, politically engaged, and organization-driven, with friendships often forming through clubs, residence life, service, and preprofessional communities.

UCLA has a much bigger student body and a more energetic, high-volume social calendar. The residential area known as “the Hill” creates a strong first-year campus experience, while Westwood provides restaurants, theaters, and everyday hangouts just outside campus. Greek life is more visible than it is at Georgetown, but it is only one part of a broad scene that also includes cultural organizations, athletics, concerts, apartment gatherings, and Los Angeles outings.

The tradeoff is that UCLA’s social life can feel more dispersed after students leave the residence halls. Many upperclassmen live in apartments around Westwood or farther away, and LA’s size, traffic, and car culture can make plans more intentional. Georgetown tends to feel like one closely connected student community, whereas UCLA can give you many distinct social worlds and more freedom to move among them.
