Georgetown students are closely tied to a walkable neighborhood of row houses, restaurants, cafés, and the Georgetown waterfront. UCLA students spend more of their day within or immediately around a broad campus with extensive housing, dining, recreation, and student activity spaces.

Georgetown’s setting is urban but not downtown in the way many applicants expect. The campus sits above the Georgetown neighborhood, where M Street and Wisconsin Avenue provide easy access to shops and food, while much of the surrounding area feels residential and polished. Downtown D.C., internships, museums, and other neighborhoods are accessible, but students often use buses, shuttles, rideshares, or longer walks rather than stepping directly onto a Metro station at campus.

UCLA’s Westwood location is part of Los Angeles, but the campus itself can feel like its own world. Its large footprint, busy central areas, and concentration of undergraduates make student life visibly campus-centered, especially for those living on the Hill. Westwood Village is convenient for meals, errands, and movies, but exploring beaches, Hollywood, downtown, or other parts of L.A. typically requires more planning and transportation than moving around D.C.

The physical atmosphere differs too: Georgetown has Gothic architecture, brick pathways, and a dense East Coast neighborhood feel; UCLA has open plazas, hills, palms, and a sunny Southern California setting. Georgetown makes city life and public-policy or international-affairs culture feel close at hand, whereas UCLA offers the scale, energy, and social ecosystem of a major flagship university.
