Is Georgetown University more prestigious than American University?

Georgetown University is more widely perceived as the more prestigious institution overall, both nationally and internationally. Its long-established reputation, highly selective undergraduate admission, and especially prominent programs in international affairs, government, business, and law give it broader name recognition. In Washington, D.C., the Georgetown name also carries particular weight in policy, diplomacy, politics, and related professional circles.

That difference is partly institutional reach. Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service is especially well known, and the university’s alumni network includes many recognizable figures in public service, global affairs, business, and law. Its Jesuit identity and historic campus add to a distinct institutional profile that many employers, graduate programs, and families immediately recognize.

American University is still a respected private university with a strong D.C. location and meaningful strengths of its own, particularly in international service, public affairs, communications, and politically engaged fields. It is often viewed as a school where students can access internships, advocacy organizations, government agencies, and media opportunities early and frequently.

For an undergraduate, however, prestige should not outweigh program fit, cost, and the opportunities a student will actually use. A student focused on a specialized American program, a particular scholarship package, or a more suitable campus environment could have an equally successful outcome there, even though Georgetown has the stronger overall prestige signal.
