Which is better for getting DC internships: UMD or George Mason?

For routine, semester-long DC internships, George Mason has a slight practical edge.

Mason students can use the university’s Washington-area alumni and employer network in fields such as public policy, international affairs, public administration, and nonprofit management. Many relevant organizations are located not only downtown but in Arlington, Alexandria, Tysons, and Fairfax, so Mason’s location is useful for opportunities across the full DC metro area. Students should still plan transportation carefully, since the Fairfax campus is not directly in downtown DC.

UMD may be especially attractive for federal-agency, research, science-policy, and congressional opportunities. It also offers the broader campus experience and research resources of a major flagship university.

The deciding factor is likely how much convenience matters. A student focused narrowly on policy, government, and nonprofit work during the academic year may find Mason’s regional positioning more immediately useful. A student who wants those opportunities alongside UMD’s larger academic ecosystem can still intern in DC, but may need to be more deliberate about commuting and fitting internships into a busy schedule.
