At Michigan, even students who are not serious sports fans tend to recognize major rivalry games, follow the season, and participate in game-day routines. The Michigan-Ohio State game in particular creates an unusually charged campus-wide event each year.

Maryland has Big Ten football, a spirited student section, and lively crowds for marquee opponents, especially when the team is performing well. Its College Park location also gives students access to Washington, D.C., which can make campus feel less singularly centered on Saturday football than Ann Arbor. Maryland’s football atmosphere is real but more variable from week to week, while Michigan offers the more dependable, tradition-heavy experience for someone who wants football to be a defining feature of college life.
